If I were starting my haircare routine all over again I would’ve done so many things differently, which would probably have saved me hundreds of dollars. After a lot of trial and error, I have found the routine that is finally pointing me in the right direction, and it’s all because I finally learned that my hair is high porosity.
What Is It?
High porosity hair has wide open cuticles that allow the hair to absorb moisture quickly, but loses it just as fast. This is normally due to genetics, but continuous chemical treatment, heat styling, and mechanical stress can worsen it, causing your hair to appear, dry, frizzy, and create breakage.
How Can I Be Sure I Have High Porosity Hair?
Besides basic observation, there are 3 different kinds of “test” you can do to ensure your hair porosity. The first one is the float test, where you place a product-free hair strand in a glass of water and if it sinks to the bottom it’s high. The second one is the spray bottle test. Spray a section of your hair with water, and if the beads are absorbed it is high porosity. Lastly, there’s the slip ‘n’ slide test, which is when you slide your finger from the ends of a single hair strand towards your scalp and if it feels rough and bumpy that means high porosity.
What I Would Recommend
Generally speaking, if you told me you have high porosity hair I would immediately recommend intense deep conditioning, mild protein treatments, and moisturising leave-in conditioners, creams, or oils. Coconut oil, honey, and hydrolyzed wheat protein are key ingredients to look out for. My personal favorite is the Japanese Shiseido Fino Line. I use the shampoo, conditioner, hair oil, and the famous hair mask, which are all complete with hydrolyzed wheat protein and royal jelly extract that fill in open cuticles and lock in moisture. Other popular and often recommended products include the Gisou Honey Milk 5-in-1 Styling Cream for heat protection, hydration, and frizz control, and the Cer-100 Collagen Coating Hair Protein Treatment, which is specifically designed for chemically damaged hair.
Please keep in mind that I am writing this based on my own personal experience. Everyone’s hair is different and beautiful in their own way. Take care of it well and it will take care of you.
